Naked Bible Podcast Episode 166: Melchizedek in the Old Testament: Part 1A

by drmsheiser | Jul 8, 2017

Melchizedek is such a complicated subject we're going to end up doing four episodes on him:

  • Old Testament, Part 1A
  • Old Testament, Part 1B
  • 2nd Temple Judaism
  • New Testament

1A is now live!

Melchizedek remains one of the most enigmatic figures in the Bible. In Episode 166 of the Naked Bible Podcast, Dr. Michael Heiser begins a detailed three-part exploration into this mysterious priest-king. This first installment zeroes in on the Old Testament material—particularly Genesis 14:17–24 and Psalm 110—where Melchizedek is directly referenced. These passages are deceptively sparse yet packed with interpretive puzzles that span centuries of scholarly debate.

Dr. Heiser takes listeners deep into the semantics and syntax of Melchizedek’s name (malkî-ṣedeq), considering whether it's a descriptive phrase (“king of righteousness”), a personal name, or a theophoric name invoking the Canaanite deity Tsedeq. He also examines whether “Salem” refers to Jerusalem and how ancient texts—from Egyptian Execration Texts to the Amarna Letters—shed light on the geography and religious climate of Melchizedek’s era.

Listeners are also introduced to figures like Adoni-zedek (Joshua 10) as comparative foils, and Dr. Heiser brings clarity to the confusing array of place names (Salem, Zion, Jerusalem, and Jebus) with help from archaeological data and Second Temple sources.

This foundational episode sets the stage for understanding Melchizedek’s later reinterpretation in Second Temple Judaism and the New Testament—particularly the Book of Hebrews. If you've ever asked, "Who exactly was Melchizedek?" or "Why does Hebrews link him to Jesus?"—this is the place to start.
