Naked Bible Podcast Episode 117 – Ezekiel 8 & 9

by drmsheiser | Sep 10, 2016

The episode is now live.

In this episode, Dr. Michael Heiser explores Ezekiel 8-9, one of the most revealing sections about spiritual corruption and sacred space in the Old Testament. This episode takes listeners inside the Jerusalem temple, where God reveals to Ezekiel, in a vision, a series of escalating abominations that have defiled His sanctuary. Dr. Heiser explains the significance of these actions and their impact on Yahweh’s presence among His people.

Heiser breaks down the four idolatrous acts that Ezekiel is shown: an image of jealousy, secret worship by elders in a dark chamber, women weeping for the god Tammuz, and men worshiping the sun with their backs to the temple. Each scene builds a case for divine abandonment, as Israel's leadership is caught engaging in the very forms of worship God had condemned. The episode highlights the theological geography of sacred space and the grievous nature of spiritual syncretism.

Listeners will learn:

  • Why the vision of hidden chambers reveals more than just external idolatry.

  • The meaning of the “image of jealousy” and how it provokes divine wrath.

  • What Tammuz worship represented and why it mattered in Ezekiel’s day.

  • How sun worship, with its eastward orientation, symbolized total rejection of Yahweh.

  • The theological consequence of these acts: Yahweh's glory prepares to leave the temple.

This is a turning point in Ezekiel’s prophetic message. It moves from warning to impending judgment, grounded in the cosmic crime of defiling God’s own dwelling place. Essential listening for anyone interested in biblical theology, sacred space, and spiritual corruption.

Another great episode; really enjoying this book.
I was hoping you’d engage with Odell’s treatment of the “Image of Jealousy.”
I’m going to have to reread her(?) article and relisten to this episode. It’s a very different interpretation though; I was wondering what your thoughts are?
