The series on baptism continues. In this episode, I apply my take on getting the circumcision-baptism relationship right to adult and/or believer's baptism.
In this follow-up to Episode 5, Dr. Michael Heiser extends his theological argument about baptism and circumcision to adult/believer’s baptism. While affirming that the New Testament primarily shows adults being baptized due to the missional context, he cautions against over-reading those cases as prohibitive of infant baptism. More importantly, Heiser maintains that whether infant or adult, baptism must be seen not as effecting salvation, but as a sign of entry into the believing community, paralleling the Old Testament function of circumcision. Adult baptism, even when preceded by genuine faith, should not be misunderstood as salvific in itself. The analogy with circumcision ensures that baptism is not misrepresented, no matter who receives it.
