In this episode, Dr. Michael Heiser explores the question of how baptism should be performed, analyzing whether Scripture definitively supports immersion, sprinkling, or pouring. He examines the Greek verb baptizō in its Septuagint and New Testament contexts and shows that while some uses imply immersion, others clearly do not. Heiser critiques the common assumption that baptizō inherently refers to downward-upward motion and argues instead that the result of the act (union with the believing community) may be more important than the physical mode. He also challenges interpretations of Romans 6:3–6 that insist on immersion as symbolic burial, pointing out that water is never mentioned in that passage. His conclusion: the mode of baptism is biblically inconclusive and theologically non-essential.
