In Episode 4 of the Naked Bible Podcast's baptism series, Dr. Michael Heiser critiques the Westminster Confession for its inconsistent and often contradictory language on baptism. Building on the previous episodes' critiques of the Belgic Confession and the Heidelberg Catechism, Heiser shows how the Westminster Confession affirms justification by grace through faith—only to confuse the issue with language implying that baptism confers grace, regeneration, and election. Heiser questions the lack of biblical support for these assertions, especially when the Confession itself claims that justification functioned the same way in both the Old and New Testaments. He underscores that such language about baptism cannot be harmonized with circumcision, which neither saved nor guaranteed election. The episode argues that the failure of creeds to maintain doctrinal coherence stems from their neglect of that baptism-circumcision analogy and their insertion of mystical, non-biblical ideas. Heiser calls for a clearer, more text-driven theology of baptism—one that doesn’t undermine the gospel it claims to support.
