UFO Sightings and the Appeal to Ignorance

I came across a wonderful book today that I’m recommending to all who want to think clearly: An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments.

The book teaches sound logical reasoning by illustrating flawed logic. Here’s an example that is ubiquitous within the ufological community. I hear or read it every week. (I hope it’s readable – but the cartoon will be and that says it all):

I’m reading Incident at Exeter and it’s chock full of regular folks saying this very thing. Fuller’s mystery mongering had a sledgehammeric(TM) subtlety.

I think the bit about “UFOs are unlikely to be aliens visiting from outer space” will be utterly lost on most UFO “believers”… who do not even know the meaning of the UFO acronym. As far as they are concerned, UFO means space ship and they will not be able to follow the logic.
